The Mabos (Museum of Art in the Sila Forest), in its section dedicated to education, will host a project involving one hundred and ten students from the Istituto d’Istruzione Superiore of Tropea and the Classical-Artistic High School of Lamezia Terme. This initiative is part of the FESR Calabria 2014-2020 Operational Program, Axis 12, Specific Objective 10.1, Action 10.1.1 FSE “Fare Scuola Fuori Dalle Aule” ("Schooling Outside the Classroom"). The project aims to revisit, in an experiential way, a famous collaboration centered on the theme of emigrants—the one between the Calabrian poet Franco Costabile and the photographer Mario Giacomelli, which led to the creation of the poetry and photography collection Il canto dei nuovi emigranti ("The Song of the New Emigrants"). The goal is to analyze this theme from a contemporary perspective, as the topic of emigration and immigration is more relevant than ever, addressing the same fundamental issue but from different perspectives and dynamics. Today's emigrants leave with designer luggage and seemingly attractive yet uncertain prospects, often facing unfulfilled aspirations. The feeling of leaving is fueled by the lack of opportunities in the local area. However, in recent years, many high-quality initiatives have shown that staying is possible—with commitment and effort. Many professionals are emerging, bringing beauty and value to other places. The project, under the slogan #restoalsud ("I Stay in the South"), aims to foster a sense of possibility, encouraging young people to harness their potential and reshape the territory into one of infinite opportunities. The program will be divided into two sessions, mirroring the project that inspired it. The first part will focus on photographic research—now accessible to everyone—using smartphones to capture daily life, reevaluating photography as a means of exploring reality. Artist Angelo Gallo will guide students through contemporary photographic training, incorporating smartphones, Afterlight filters, and social media to investigate migration processes in a world where reality is often reduced to an image. The second part will be led by theater director and actor Pierpaolo Bonaccurso. Drawing from Costabile’s poetry, students will reflect on the theme of migration, engaging with it as both cause and effect. Through mirrors and projections, they will confront themselves, culminating in a performative installation. The project will be documented daily on the museum’s social media channels, allowing the public to follow the progress of the workshops. On October 20, 2018, at 9:00 PM, the final event will take place in the greenhouse-laboratory space at Mabos.
