SENSE Residency: The Rose in the Glass

The guiding thread of the new artistic season branded MABOS, the poetry of Franco Costabile remains a beacon in the selection of titles and conceptual nuances of each residency.
With The Rose in the Glass We arrive at the most iconic image, which has always been associated with the Calabrian poet: the title of a poem about the more rural and subjugated Calabria – but also of his most famous collection. This poetic phrase is also a symbol of the tragic spirit that hangs over one of the most poignant and representative episodes of Costabile's biographical story, immortalized in the verses of an epitaph written by Giuseppe Ungaretti, following the suicide of the Lamezia poet that occurred in Rome on April 14, 1965.
An icon of life and death, of courage and surrender. A symbol of contradiction and a mark of inexhaustible beauty that today serves as a prelude to Paolo Grassino's arrival at MABOS.

Paolo Grassino
Paolo Grassino was born in Turin in 1967, and his father Alfredo introduced him to artistic disciplines from a young age. In 1984, he enrolled in an artistic high school, where he met and began to study with several Italian artists such as Marco Gastini, Luigi Mainolfi, Gilberto Zorio, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Sergio Ragalzi. Since 1988, he has participated in solo and group exhibitions, and in 1991, he began attending the Albertina Academy in Turin alongside Luisa Rabbia, Saverio Todaro, and Domenico Borrelli, forming a working group and sharing initial workshops. In 2000, the GAM in Turin dedicated a solo exhibition to him, which helped his artistic research gain recognition from national and international galleries and institutions. In 2005, he created the large installation **Armilla** on the facade of the Fondazione Palazzo Bricherasio in Turin, and in 2008, Lorand Hegyi invited him for a solo exhibition in France at the Museum of Saint-Etienne. He also participated in the XV Quadriennale d'Arte in Rome in 2008. Luca Massimo Barbero dedicated a personal room to him at the MACRO in Rome in 2011, and that same year, he participated in the Fourth Moscow Biennale. His works were also exhibited in international museums such as the Frost Art Museum in Miami and the Loft Project ETAGI in St. Petersburg in 2011. Phillip Van den Bossche invited him to the 2012 edition of the **Beaufort 04 Triennial of Contemporary Art by the Sea** in Ostend, and in 2013, the Italian Institute of Culture in Madrid dedicated a solo exhibition to him. In 2013, a volume published by Skira collected his most significant works from 1992 to 2012, presented during his solo exhibition **"Path in Three Acts"** at the Centro d'arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci in Milan. That same year, he began teaching Sculpture and Ornamental Plastic courses at Fine Arts Academies, first in Carrara and Palermo, and later at Brera in Milan. In 2017, the Casa Fiat de Cultura in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, dedicated a solo exhibition to him curated by Alessandro Demma, and his works entered the collection of The Parkview Museum in Beijing and Singapore. In 2019, he held a major solo exhibition in the historic rooms of Palazzo Saluzzo Paesana, showcasing many works that charted his artistic journey over 30 years. That same year, he participated in the thematic exhibition **"Disturbing Narrative"** at the Parkview Museum in Singapore. In 2021, he took part in the large traveling exhibition **"The Silk Road: Contemporary Art and Artists from Italy,"** organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with stops in museums in Kiev, Ankara, Tbilisi, Tashkent, Beijing, and Xi’an.
The MABOS - Museum of Art of the Sila Forest
The MABOS, Museum of Art of the Sila Forest, is the place where Art and the Forest come together, creating an exhibition and workshop park that welcomes artists, art critics and historians, curators, and enthusiasts. The exhibition park— which has been expanding its collection year after year since 2017, and therefore features a variable number of artworks—can be explored for free at any time of the day or night. Visitors may even have the chance to encounter resident artists, witness the creation process of an artwork, and take part in events, cultural talks, and educational workshops for both adults and children.
