The third edition of The Sense Residencies is called “Fresco”On August 23, 2018, the residency began for three artists, Giuseppe Ferrise, Meri Tancredi e Michela Tobioloalongside the residency of young art critic Antonio Di Cori. Three very different artists, yet all sharing, in this experience, a close connection with natural elements, though extracted from their traditional contexts and reinterpreted with a new contemporary vision. Colors, lights, ritual chants, and fairy-tale creatures. Ferrise, a sculptor from Lamezia, has lived since birth in a countryside home surrounded by a dense forest. From this forest, his creatures come to life, made from natural recycled materials. Raffia, bark, stone, and leaves transform into hypertrophic beings—playful yet, at times, unsettling. During the residency, he developed a work related to his series of fairy-tale animals that watch us pass by, from above. Tancredi, an artist from Perugia, expresses herself through various forms of art, including painting, sculpture, installations, and video-audio installations. During her residency at Mabos, she worked on the cognitive aspects related to the concept of limits (perception – memory – transgression), engaging with these themes to analyze and reinterpret them through a personal vision that blends natural elements with artificial materials. Tobiolo, an artist from Pescara, is in constant pursuit of a connection with magic—far from mere rationality—guided by intuition, instinct, wonder, dreams, and insights that bring us closer to the deepest meanings of ourselves and the universe. During the Fresco residency, she sought a connection between the earth and the sky, passing through the sea, with a sculptural installation and a ritual action. In the Sense: Fresco the artists were observed by young critic Di Cori ho immersed himself in their world, their thoughts, and their habits. He watched them work, reflect, converse, and create.
Here is Antonio Di Cori’s account, day by day, of the evolution of the artists’ work.
Below are the videos of the artists talking about their works created during the residency at Mabos.
